The Nyinkka Nyunyu Centre is
a Julalikari
Council Aboriginal Corporation community development
project on behalf of the principal custodians of the
site and the Aboriginal community of Tennant Creek and
the Barkly region. It is a meeting place, a learning
place, a place to relax and enjoy.
The Nyinkka Nyunyu Centre consists of: the main building
which contains both a permanent and a changing cultural
exhibit, the cafe which
offers a variety of traditional and contemporary cuisine,
a shop
containing the works of local artists. The Centre is
surrounded by an arid zone landscaping that represents
the different habitats of the Barkly region.
Once the Centre is complete, there will be daily tours
available as well as dances and other activities in
and around the site.
The Centre is scheduled to open in April 2003. For
an overview of the progress on the project see the complete
project timeline.

The
spiky tailed goanna
|
|
Nyinkka
Nyunyu is an Aboriginal sacred site in Warumungu
country.
Most sites remain secret. By chance the town of
Tennant Creek grew up around the home of the spiky
tailed goanna, a powerful Wirnkarra or ancestral
being.
The rocks are right beside the Stuart Highway
as it passes through Tennant Creek.
